Title: Who is the "he" who confirms a covenant in Dan.9:27 ?
Post by: Quasar on September 21, 2013, 10:48:13 AM
Daniel 9:27 (HCSB) He will confirn a firm covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and offering. And the abomination of desolation will be on a wing of the temple until the decreed destruction is poured out on the him.”

Who is he who confirms a covenant with many in Dan.9:27?

The question is, who is the he? The traditional view of this passage is that "he" here refers to the Antichrist. The Antichrist will confirm a covenant and stop sacrifices that at some point a future will resume, and set up the Abomination of Desolation.

Preterists say that he refers to the real Christ; Jesus Christ is actually the one that causes sacrifices to stop by sacrificing himself. As far as the overspreading of abominations I don't know how they explain that.

Covenant Confirmed Elsewhere

So how do we know who the he is? We can know for sure who he is. The he of Daniel 9:27 does three things: he first confirms the covenant, he stops the daily sacrifices, and he sets up the Abomination of Desolation.

In Daniel 11 we have a discourse about the King of the North. When you get to verse 31, it talks about the Antichrist and his partners placing a abomination that makes desolate and stopping the sacrifices. This is absolute proof that the he of Daniel 9:27 is the Antichrist not the real Christ.

Daniel 11:31 (KJV) And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.

If you're not sure this is the Antichrist, read on what else this person does:

Daniel 11:36 (KJV) And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak unheard of things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

Hi Quasar.  :)
The desolator.

Dan 9:27
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week:
and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice
and the oblation to cease,
And for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate,
even until the consummation,
and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

I agree it speaks of antichrist. Other than what you've already said, A little more on it…

Bullinger gives a pretty good translation on this one…

(So in place of the daily sacrifice comes… )

“On the overspreading wing (or battlement) of the abomination comes the desolator.”

The ‘desolator’ being an entity and not a condition and thus the ’causer of desolation’.

Same with Matt. 24:15 and Mark 13:14

Mar 13:14
But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation,
spoken of by Daniel the prophet,
standing where he , ought not,
(let him that readeth understand,)
then let them that be in Judea flee to the mountains:

Changed “it” to “he” since it’s an entity and not a condition being spoken of.

Same entity here…. (obviously)

Mat 24:15
When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation,
spoken of by Daniel the prophet,
stand in the holy place,
(whoso readeth, let him understand)

And here….

Rev 9:11
And they had a king over them,
which is the angel of the bottomless pit,
whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon,
but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
Of Hebrew origin [H11]; a destroying angel - Abaddon.

Active participle of G622; a destroyer (that is, Satan) - Apollyon.

Satan is the antichrist. In person as the angel that he is. Claiming to be God, claiming to be the Christ and King, disguised as an angel of light. The “light” part is important.  It’s all going to be part of deceiving the whole world into believing that he is God, the Father of lights.

2Co 11:14
And no marvel; for Satan himself is disguised (G3345) into an angel of light.

Same entity here….

2Th 2:3
Let no man deceive you by any means:
for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first,
and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
2Th 2:4  (quoted from Dan.11:36-37)
Who opposeth and exalteth himself
above all that is called God,
or that is worshiped;
so that he as God
sitteth in the temple of God,
showing himself that he is God.

Who is named here as Satan himself….

2Th 2:9  Even him, (Christ)
whose coming is after the working of Satan
with all power
and signs
and lying wonders,….

Same entity here…

Rev 13:11
And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth;
and he had two horns like a lamb,
and he spake as a dragon.
Rev 13:12
And he exerciseth all the power
of the first beast before him,
and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein
to worship the first beast,
whose deadly wound was healed.
Rev 13:13
And he doeth great wonders,
so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth
in the sight of men,
Rev 13:14
And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles
which he had power to do in the sight of the beast;
saying to them that dwell on the earth,
that they should make an image to the beast,
which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

Two horns (powers)  like a lamb could be the power to save and power to destroy.

It’s going to be all about deception.  Satan himself, in person, is the ‘he’ of Dan 9:27.

No, Satan is not the three "he's" of Dan.9:27!  The beast out of the sea in Rev.13:1, is, who the final world ruler, before the return of Christ in His second coming, in Rev.19:14.

Satan will give the beast out of the sea, his throne, power and great authority in Rev.13:2, where Satan is called the dragon.  Rev.12:9 identifies the dragon as being Satan.
