The trends are hard to ignore. As of 2010, the U.S. birth rate was 8 percent lower than it was in 2007. The birth rate today for women of child-bearing age is about half of what the U.S. rate was when it peaked in 1957.

With more older Americans and fewer younger workers in the years ahead, there is considerable worry about the effects of this demographic shift on Social Security, Medicare and the like. There may be fewer workers paying the taxes that support these programs at a time when they are paying out more benefits to retirees.

This has never happened in history before. Humankind has never faced this before.
